There is need for education stakeholders to align the education system in the country towards generating the critical mass of appropriate skills to spur economic and social growth, Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has said.

Mr. Musyoka said for the country to realize the Vision 2030 objectives, predicated on a sustained growth rate of 10 percent, the education system must be aligned towards generating the critical mass of appropriate skills as the
only way to accelerate economic and social growth.

The Vice President emphasized on the need to enrich the country's reform agenda by learning from best practices elsewhere such as those that ensure harmonized university circular so as to allow co-offering of academic programmes and joint certification.

Speaking during the second graduation ceremony of Mount Kenya University, Thika, today, Mr. Musyoka said the reform agenda in education sector also focuses on developing circula that enhances knowledge generation, creativity, innovation and character transformation.

"It emphasizes research as an underpinning factor in economic growth," he said.

He said the reform effort has also embraced and institutionalized new and emerging practices in education including distance, open learning, space education and E-learning in an effort to increase access to university education
in the country.

The Vice President commended the Mount Kenya University for actively participating in community- outreach programmes. Indeed I am informed that that under this programme, over 170 Dadaab refugees have successfully completed a Certificate course in Primary Teachers Education Programme,'' said Mr. Musyoka.

On constitution, Mr. Musyoka called on Kenyans to approach the second republic following the passage of a new constitution dispensation as a united people.

He noted that the forthcoming promulgation of the new law will be an exciting historical moment for the country.

Mr. Musyoka urged the media to create positive image that portrays the country as ready for the new beginning.

Higher Education Minister William Ruto assured that the Government will continue to provide an enabling environment for both private and public universities to develop and play their rightful role in human capital development.

He said there is need for closer collaboration between various stakeholders in human resource management particularly in imparting the necessary skills necessary to propel the country into greater heights and prosperity.

Mr. Ruto said the Government will explore ways of making higher learning more accessible, affordable and of quality standards as well as relevant to the needs of the country.

On constitution, the Minister urged Kenyans to work together in the implementation of the new constitution and move forward as one people, one nation.

He said the new law provides new challenges to institutions of higher learning to provide the necessary expertise and be part of the implementations and operationalization process.

During the ceremony, 1474 graduands received certificates, diplomas and degrees in various disciplines.

The University also honored former cabinet minister Njenga Karume and Madam Zulfat Mukarubega of Rwanda for their immense contribution to the development and expansion of education, entrepreurship and leadership which has earned them deserved recognition by the university.
