Science is useful but that is not all it is. Science can be uplifting, thrilling, life-enhancing. Originally broadcast on Britain's Channel 4 in 1996, "Break the Science Barrier" follows the Oxford Biologist Richard Dawkins as he meets with people who have experienced the wonders of science first-hand.

We meet the astronomer who first discovered pulsars, the geneticist who invented DNA fingerprinting, a scientist who discovered a protein that causes cancer, and others. Richard Dawkins interviews famous admirers of science such as Douglas Adams and David Attenborough, and asks them why science means so much to them. We also see how dangerous ignorance of science can be in classrooms, courts, and beyond.

With so many expressing paranormal beliefs and ignorance of science, Dawkins encourages viewers to contrast these ancient superstitions with the power and beauty of our scientific achievements and understanding.

Richard Dawkins is a British ethologist, evolutionary biologist and popular science author. He was formerly Professor for Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. He was voted Britain's leading public intellectual by readers of Prospect magazine and was named one of Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential People" for 2007.

Dawkins came to prominence with his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene", which popularised the gene-centred view of evolution and introduced the term "meme". He is a prominent critic of creationism and intelligent design. In his 1986 book "The Blind Watchmaker", he argued against the watchmaker analogy, an argument for the existence of a supernatural creator based upon the complexity of living organisms. Instead, he described evolutionary processes as analogous to a blind watchmaker. He has since written several popular science books, and makes regular television and radio appearances, predominantly discussing these topics.

Dawkins is an atheist, secular humanist, sceptic, scientific rationalist, and supporter of the Brights movement. In his 2006 book "The God Delusion", he contends that a supernatural creator almost certainly does not exist and that faith qualifies as a delusion − as a fixed false belief.

  • "lets have a girl for Jesus Christ..." love it.

  • Ignorant ignorant ignorant......

And you wonder why rational thinking people call Christians ignorant and delusional?

I'll tell you why. Because of your insidious leaders feeding you horseshite about a man who died on a cross to "save" us.

Open your eyes, ears and mind to the world and you'll see that your God couldnt have made the world.

Religion is the cancer of society. And until it is gotten rid of people will be at a disadvantage.

  • If it hadn't been for Cotton Eye Joe...

  • Wow. This is magnificent. I wish I were taught these things when I was a child.

  • Evolution can't answer why, only what. Even if we scientifically understand every split second in the history of evolution, it still ignores the greater question of why gravity exists, why the laws of natural selection worked, why every moment of the 14 billion years before humanity perfectly led to a species that can contemplate the past and future, or truth and lies, or joy and suffering. Science will never find or replace God, only show us how awesome sheer human/universal existence is.

  • @TheJohnskinner

Science is a constantly expanding body of knowledge. What people choose to do with that knowledge is at times is unfortunate. At other times it's fantastic.

So do we just cross our fingers and hope current and future leaders will use it for the best interests of the planet in general so we can survive long enough to inhabit other worlds before the Earth is used up? I don't know... I'm not sure I know what else to do :X

  • Richard Dawkins ftw!

  • A little trivia for you, .. did you know Richard Dawkins wife Lallia Ward used to be Doctor Who's assistant in the late 70's TV show.

  • If science has the answer to everything we need, then why hasn't it solved all the problems in the world? When in fact we are draining the planets resources to fund our frankenstien creature comforts....We are 100% dependant on scieence to get us out of the mess it's got us into.

  • all of us have been the animals of the past. ppl that believe in evolution act as if they arent a part of the process... we all spent almost a billion years living and dying in animal bodies. its the only thing that can be true. we have evolved to this point in history where we can know the real truth. we are smart enough now, so get past the fear and wake up to reality people. when dinosaurs went extinct, we went extinct as dinosaurs. do you get it? think about it
