Edward J. Vassallo, Ready Coordinator for Philadelphia's Office of Emergency Management, brings you Wally Wise Guy's Wise Words of the Week - Be Aware of the Warning Signs of Heat Exhaustion.
Heat Exhaustion is a heat-related illness that can develop after several days of exposure to high temperatures or by not drinking enough fluids. It causes:
- Decreased energy
- Nausea
- Faintness
- Slight loss of appetite
- Light-headedness
- Tiredness
- Weakness
- Headache
- Muscle Cramps
If you experience any of these symptoms, go to a cool environment, drink fluids, remove excess clothing, and rest. If symptoms worsen, seek medical attention.

Do not tough out heat exhaustion, as soon as you feel it come on get out of it any way you can, if possible, if not, heat stroke is just around the corner and that is some serious pain.

I almost got heat exhaustion earlier today while bike riding 6 miles. When I got home, I was hot, sweaty, only slightly light-headed, and maybe a little weak. I felt weird when I got a sip of really cold water, and then I slept on the couch for two hours. I'm not sure if I had a slight case of heat exhaustion or not.....
