After winning 3 rounds and a semi final of 80's Australian TV talent show Starsearch and seeing off bands playing synth pop, power pop and funk, John Kennedy's Love Gone Wrong made it to the grand final.
Up against the winners of a previous semi final, Fat Time, JKLGW would have to come up with something special to take out the big prize.
(Some people have commented that the previous challengers Soft Toys had a lame name. But Fat Time!?! Come on!)
We again loaned clothes from some city boutiques with the boys in black leather and Margaret and me looking like we'd just stepped off a Roxy Music LP cover shoot.
We'd pretty much run out of our top shelf original material so we chose to perform a new song that if nothing else repeated the band's name so many times that the national TV audience could not help but to remember it.
The song, Love Gone Wrong, also had a great soul intro lifted from Elvis' Patch It Up. We felt we'd done a damn fine job.
Then came Fat Time (God, that name!) with a cover of Sam and Dave's classic soul tune, Hold On I'm Coming. Huh? Hold on. Wait a minute. Didn't it say in the rules that bands had to play original songs? Well actually, no it didn't.
Love Gone Wrong? Will it end in tears? Hold on...
