The USTA is proud to recognize An Achievable Dream tennis, based out of Newport News, Virginia, with the 2009 USTA/NJTL Chapter of the Year Award.
The program was formally recognized during the USTA's annual Community Tennis Development Workshop held on January 22-24, 2010 in San Diego, California.
An Achievable Dream (AAD) is a nonprofit, year-round, K-12, extended- day public school born out of its founders belief that all children can learn and succeed regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds, and that education can break the cycle of poverty and ensure that students become productive citizens. Nearly 600, mostly minority students, ages 6-18, participate in tennis programs that teach teamwork and sportsmanship, perseverance and discipline. Character education is the foundation of AAD, built into a curriculum that challenges students and raises levels of expectations they have for themselves building confidence and self-esteem. AAD has more than 30 participants in the annual Arthur Ashe Essay and Art Contest, including two section winners, and recently took 25 students to New York to participate in the Arthur Ashe Kids Day event that annually kicks off the US Open.
