Released in 2003 on Stones Throw.

Dudley Perkins (aka: Declaime) is a rapper / singer from Oxnard, California. He has been making music since 1987. This is his first album under this name.

A Lil' Light is a pretty strange, but wonderful album. It is also very, very blunted. Very original, both in sound and in idea. A very introspective, laid back, alternate universe affair.

The production is done solely by Stones Throw' Madlib, who is rumored to give first pick of all his beats to Dudley. What Dudley does with them like a bad idea in the beginning, he sings / speaks / raps over them, singing in a very off key manner (like ODB or Andre 3000). He sings about the secrets of the universe, parenthood, troubled relationships, aliens, weed and the beauty in life.

A trippy little album that is really good because of it's flaws, the off key delivery, half baked philosophies, the dusty beats. There are more than a few rough patches, but when the chemistry is just right,(Fallin, Flowers, Money) magic happens.

Worth checking out if your a very open minded individual. It's music that will tickle your soul and stimulate your brain. A little bit silly, but very heartfelt and utterly creative.

3.4/5

  • Have I heard you talk about this before? I'm getting such a sense of Deja vu!

  • I reviewed his "Expressions" album a while ago. That's his 2nd album.

  • referring to what you say at 2:30... if you listen to "Forevaendless" Dudley says: "This universe is endless and everything in it is endless. How can the universe be endless if everything is not endless?" he means to say that our view on endlessness is distorted and that infinity can be found within every finite detail. After death comes new life form, so even though there is an end, the new beginning is just as compulsory and therefore the law of endlessness is fulfilled and not defied.

  • Great Breakdown of this brothers best release blessing to you all!!
