Punk never was a musical genre, it all started as garage rock with the Who the Kinks, New York Dolls and MC5. They were bohemians artist influenced by new york popart scene, in this scence they were like the progs heroes that mixed rock with classical, jazz and folk. Not the departure of Gabriel or Hackett killed Genesis, they died like all the great prog bands (as well as the punk movement) by a diseae called 80's. That was the time of metal, new wave and hardcore. The great prog bands lost their songs to their egos, in "Works" ELP stoped being a band, Yes almost crumbled by fight s of their members but they produced the masterpiece "going for the one".
