She was strong, but she was also a heroin addict who died at 47. She looked 60 on her last filmed performance, like a little old lady. She was depressed though for much of her life. If you read her life story, there are several books, you'll learn just what she was up against, but it was more than racims, it was sexism and the loss of her mother, knowing her father was white and she never knew him etc.

Tears, thrills and goosebumps...

Can anybody tell me which is the movie this is taken from? I watched it years ago and in Italian was called "La città del Jazz" but I can't find it anymore anywhere...

Thanks for helping me and... Happy Thanksgiving to all of you who celebrate! :)

And thanks to Lady Gardenia Day and Mr Armstrong for all this...

greetings from Italy

Incredible! Billie sings bluesy and jazzy narratives that resonates with people. She was a strong black woman, not a weepy, sad-sack character. A tragic & complicated person who ultimately was worn down by an uptight, close-minded racist society. Check out Donald Clarke's "Wishing On the Moon" for the definitive biography.

What a beautiful woman. Such talent, such a fantastic voice and such a sad life. I love you, Billie Holiday.
