These are some shots of "Rainaway", a great grandson of Secretariat, at an appearance at the Virginia State Fair Sept. 24, 2008.
The compelling story of the rescue and rehabilitation of this horse, along with some shots of what will be his new home at the Meadow in Caroline County Virginia can be found via links at http://www.jamesrivernews.com/
The State Fair of Virginia will be moving to their new Caroline County facility in 2009.
It is fitting that Rainaway will live there, as the Meadow was the birthplace of Secretariat.

  • Im sorry to say but its not that big of a deal. There is a mare at my barn that is Secretariat's great granddaughter that almost went to the Breeder's Cup, but sadly suffered from an injury. He sired over 600 foals, do the math and thats a LOT of great grand sons and daughters. None of his foals ever accomplished as much as he did, and I don't think any horse ever will. This horse was special with heart that was twice its normal size, and his strong will. Long live Secretariat,

  • omg theres a horse t the barn i keep my horse at who Secretariat's great grandson too

  • @barrelracer888 no he is half quater horse and now lives in atlanta at little creek farm where my horse is

  • His bloodlines as well as his dam's continue to spread to this day, and the strength of that gene line will continue. As we've learned, he had that oversized heart - I don't think we will ever see that again. That said, part of his success was his ability (and his mother was same way), to communicate and understand. That can't be taught, but I would expect exists in most of his and his mother's bloodlines.

  • @WannabeStuntRider That would be awesome either way, Warmblood or TB. Must say not just the Secretariat side, but your mare has an awesome pedigree on the sires side, bet she has tons and tons of stamina? Some of the mares in her line are long lived aswell think one of them is 32 and still going :) yeah you have plenty of time to think about breeding her in future. Wish you good luck on that if you decide to do so later down the years :)

  • He looks so much like Secreteriat! Does he run?

  • @MrNativeDancer Yeah. Umm ill possibly breed her, but i was thinking of breeding her with a Warmblood or something, as I compete her in jumping etc. I have thought and have been told to breed her with an amazing racer and i could get an awesome racer out of it. But shes still young, and I want to get the best out of her before I think about breeding her :)

  • @WannabeStuntRider Ah cool so you got Secretariat on the dams side! Are you ever going to breed from her? The reason I ask is that from the dams side, some one bred a fantastic mare, from a mare that was no good from the Secretariat line dams side etc, and she produced Broad Appeal. So if you bred from her you could end up with a star! and not even realise it?

  • @MyKoulayy He has, he has a great grand daughter called Broad appeal and she is the fastest mare I have ever seen in my life on dirt. She has won nearly $4.5m in prize money as well! nearly 3 times as much as her great grandad did Secretariat. I tell you dude she has inherited his burst of speed and just like him the further she goes the faster she goes...
