Former quarterback Steve McNair has been killed after suffering a fatal gunshot wound to the head in downtown Nashville, police officials told CBS station WJZ-TV in Baltimore. An unidentified female victim was also found dead at the scene.

No suspects have been taken into custody. Several people were being taken to police headquarters for questioning, Don Aaron with the Metro Nashville Police Department told CBS affiliate WTVF-TV in Nashville.

Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams confirmed the quarterback's death in a brief statement released Saturday. Adams called McNair "one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans. He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl."

McNair led the Titans within a yard of forcing overtime in the 2000 Super Bowl.

McNair was dealt to the Ravens in June 2006 for a fourth-round draft pick. He signed a five-year contract, but the QB retried from the game last year after being permanently sidelined by an injury.

The 35-year-old McNair guided the Ravens to a 13-3 record in 2006, his first season in Baltimore after 11 years in Tennessee. But he injured his groin during the season opener last season and never regained the form that enabled him to earn a berth in four Pro Bowls.

McNair began his career in 1995 with the Houston Oilers, who eventually became the Tennessee Titans. He led the team to four playoff appearances, including the Super Bowl after the 1999 season. He was named co-MVP of the league in 2003, sharing the award with Peyton Manning, after throwing for 3,215 yards and 24 touchdowns with only seven interceptions.

  • Steve, Rest in Peace man. I don't care if you are remembered as a Titan or a Raven. It was too soon for you to go. You will be missed by not only the Ravens family, but around the NFL as well. Rest In Peace.
