I played it exactly this way for years and years, until I found out it's 3rds and should be 7th fret first string, 8th fret second string and is played as paired notes. While it sounds right to play it in 6ths, it's not technically correct, but maybe it doesn't matter all that much, but fwiw, thirds is correct.
