Well, actually those translations are kinda' wrong. You see, the word water translates simply as "agua", so the article "el" comes from "the" so "el agua" isn't just "water" in english, it translates as "the water". The same for "the meat", "the food". Now, gender in spanish is somehow difficult, because there are some words that are feminine and others that are masculine, for example: water; the word on itself is feminine, but the article must be in masculine, as "El agua".
