** DUNDALK DIARY ** Tuesday March 17th 2009
There is again another enforced gap between the entries. This is par for the course but this year there is a rumour circulating that someone has been injured at some point of the journey. No confirmation of that as yet.
The crowds are swelling.
As you may notice, I have included several members of my family in this film.
I can not for the life of me see the sense of having a reviewing stand which in Dundalk is always in Clanbrassil Street. On the stand are the nobility of the town and quite apart from the fact that very few people outside the immediate vicinity are aware that there is a stand , I always feel that this harks back to the good old cap touching days when the peasantry genuflected to the gentry.
There is of course, always the argument that the giving out of awards helps to promote a better quality of entry . Not all of the entries join to compete. Not all of them can afford to spend a lot of money that may never be recovered just to glam up for their five minutes of fame.
The original intention was to film the parade along it's route , showing as much of the town as possible but once again I failed . Ah well, If you missed most of it, So did I!
Judging from the photos which appeared in the local papers the following day I missed quite a lot of the entries but that is the way I have seen most of the town's parades over the last forty years and that is the way most people have seen them.
After the big parade a squad arrives for the clean up..
My thanks to all who organised and took part in this and every other parade that has ever taken place in Dundalk .
