NEW YORK, Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Hip-hop culture and controversy have always made for familiar bedfellows. Yet, in the wake of the Imus controversy and in a year when the genre's sales have tumbled, hip-hop finds itself under an exceptional amount of scrutiny and pressure -- and the stakes have never been higher. BET NEWS takes a powerful and compelling look at the state of hip-hop today in a three-part series titled HIP HOP vs. AMERICA. Hosted by BET's own Toure and Jeff Johnson, this special showcases a candid, heated forum that will allow audiences to hear the opinions of prominent leaders in the hip-hop industry, the political realm, academia and the Black church.

  • Its funny how they talk about violence in hip hop. I actually like gangsta rap with violent lyrical content but i don't see that on tv. Its more lil weirdos with pink shirts and skinny jeans talking about making it rain... That debate gotta be really old cause now the new problem is all these effeminate dudes in the game... I don't see anything "Gansgta" in rap right now...

  • Ppl should stop blamin the rappers. I know they are corrupt but a lot of the blame goes on the big record labels that allow artists like 50 cent and lil wayne to get heavy mainstream attention. Majority of the rappers we know are nothin put pawns. Ever since rise of gangsta rap in early 90s, hip hop turned from the voice of the ghetto people to a materialistic mafia portrayed industry.

  • im not condoning coperate america.but if the record label is saying you have to be a certain way in order to sell. That would only make these rappers sellouts. They are willing to cave in to the pressure, because they see dollar signs. and it's sad.
