Embarkation Tuesday, in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, is a day of partying, water pistols, open air rave, slippery pole competition and general mayhem, fun and celebration.
The religious highlight of the day is when the Virgen Del Carmen and San Telmo are carried down to the harbour on the shoulders of fishermen where, watched by 35,000 people, they're serenaded and then loaded onto fishing boats and taken on a trip around the harbour in order to ensure full fishing nets for the coming year.
In temperatures tipping 34 degrees C, water plays an essential cooling and fun role in the day's activities.
These are just a few highlights of the day.
