Vasily Gerello Василий Герелло Baritone

•Honoured Artist of Russia.
•Prize-winner at the BBC International Opera Singers´ Competition (Cardiff, 1993).
•Prize-winner at the International Rimsky-Korsakov Young Opera Singers´ Competition (1st prize, St Petersburg, 1994).
•Recipient of the Golden Sofit, St Petersburg´s highest theatre prize (1999).
•Recipient of the Fortissimo music prize, founded by the St Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire ("Performing skills" category).

Born in Vaslovitsy in Chernovitsky Region (Ukraine). Graduated from the Leningrad State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire in 1991 (class of Professor N. Serval). Was invited to join the Kirov (Mariinsky) Opera Company while still a fourth year student in 1990.

Guest soloist with the world´s leading opera houses, among them the Opéra Bastille (Paris), the Semperoper (Dresden), the Deutsche Oper and the Staatsoper (Berlin), the Metropolitan Opera (New York), the Wiener Staatsoper, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (London), La Fenice (Venice), the National Opera of Canada (Toronto), the Teatro Colón (Buenos Aires), the Teatro San Paolo (Brazil), the Opera Santiago de Chile, La Scala (Milan) and opera houses in Amsterdam and Bergen.

Has a busy concert schedule. He has taken part in a concert by young soloists of Pacific Ocean nations at the San Francisco Opera, performed a solo programme at the Théâtre du Châtelet and sung a concert of bel canto music with the Symphony Orchestra of Belgium. Has performed in New York (Carnegie Hall) and London (Royal Albert Hall) with the Dallas and New York Symphony Orchestras. He has appeared with such outstanding conductors as Valery Gergiev, Riccardo Muti, Myung-Whun Chung, Claudio Abbado, Bernard Haitink and Fabio Luisi.

ACT FOUR:
On the border of Scotland and England, Macduff has joined Duncan's son Malcolm, along with an English army and a band of Scottish refugees. Macduff's family has been massacred, and he's out for revenge. The band advances to Birnam Wood, where they all pick branches from the trees to use as camouflage as they approach Macbeth's castle.

Meanwhile, inside the castle, the scene is set for one of the most vivid passages in any Verdi opera. Lady Macbeth appears, sleepwalking. Her doctor and lady-in-waiting listen aghast as she reflects, in her sleep, on the murders she and her husband have committed.

In the final scene, Macbeth realizes that even though he successfully seized the throne, he has failed as a leader — and he sings the fine aria, "Pieta, rispetto, amore." With Macduff's forces approaching, hiding behind branches, Macbeth is told that the Birnam Wood itself is striding toward the castle. He goes off to meet the invasion.

Shouting is not singing and a throaty quality is not a choice but rather correct placement, as denoted by the great Giuseppe di Luca

@MrSkylark1 Nothing good to say? Too far back. That's his choice to make. You still have to appreciate his fine qualities.

Great voice but a little on the dry side as he sings a little too open. Because he produces a sound that is very far back in his throat and the voice is large it produces a wooden sound. That could easily change with some additional rounding of the vowel or covering but not too much to destroy the sound. (my opinion of course) Will be interesting to watch this voice progress.

Admiro profundamente al señor Gerello, desde que lo vi en el Teatro Colón de Argentina como el Marqués de Posa (año '98) me impresionó la intensidad emotiva que le imprime al canto, los matices y lo creíbles que resultan sus personajes, ya sea Alfio, Tonio o Germont. Me encantaría volver a verlo por aquí ! La tortuosidad de un Macbeth o un Conde de Luna interpretado por él simplemente sería maravilloso.Ojalá pueda escucharlo en "Il balen del suo sorriso"!
