Within limited circles, it is true, Walter Benjamin has gained a lot of recognition over the last few decades. He probably didn't get so much before because, failing the requirements to become a professor, he struggled to get his work published, at least in the way he wanted it. I'm sure I don't really need to explain why a German Jew was fleeing Europe during the Second World War.

I don't get it. Why didn't he just go back to his homeland and help out? With all his talents, surely he could have contributed greatly to the war effort.
He must have pissed himself silly when the French invaded his homeland.

But if he is one of the most important writers of the 20th century, how come nobody ever heard of him or read anything he wrote? He ha d a philosophy? I never heard of Benjaminism. Has anyone ever actually watched this video? Yes, probably more people than read the mook's scribblings.
