The Marine Advanced Technology Education Center (M.A.T.E.) coordinates an international student ROV competition. Student teams from middle schools, high schools, home schools, community colleges, and universities participate in the events. The video was taken from a preliminary competition held in Washington State and was attended by many local schools and colleges. I was part of the Olympic College team, (our ROV was the aqua colored vehicle), this was our first competition and we learned a lot from it. We ran into several snags along the way, one problem we encountered was a chemical reaction between our seals and a waterproofing compound applied last minuet. It was this valuable lesson in materials engineering along with many others that helped to improve our design and construction techniques for the following year and beyond.

  • Were you ranger or explorer class?

  • @MrTristanPlaysGuitar

Explorer class I think (whichever is easier...)

  • How would you make something like this wireless?

  • @mondays89

We did use a 4channel RC transmitter/reciever, but we had to run the antennae to the surface...

  • we need mor people like them we only know 5% of the ocean

  • @nwcafesurfer

Ranger Class is the easier one. Explorer goes straight to international and get 48 Volts of power, whereas Ranger has to win regionals and only gets 12 volts of power

  • @mondays89 you cant radio waves disperse very quickly in water you have to use a tether or make it autonomus

  • Pretty Cool! Those ROVs were awesome.

  • The Marines killed Steve Irwin!

  • Hey! I remember that day... I was on the pink "Rov Chix" team. My foot's on YouTube! Hurray!
