The Police and the opposition Forum For Democratic Change party met yesterday and struck a deal over Dr. Kizza Besigye's return, averting violent confrontation that has characterized previous encounters between the law enforcers and opposition supporters. After hours of closed door talks, representatives of the Police and the FDC emerged to address a joint press conference where they announced that Dr. Besigye will be accorded a chase car and allowed to stop over and address supporters briefly along Entebbe road enroute to his Kasangati home. There after special prayers will be held for the FDC leader at Nsambya play ground tomorrow.
When the FDC party people announced the return of their president on Wednesday, police also released their plan for controlling traffic along the busy Entebbe road. Apparently, the daggers were drawn for yet another violent encounter but that was not to be.
Representatives of the FDC and the Police met behind closed doors at police headquarters for hours. But in a surprise move, the two teams emerged from the talks to announce a new found working relationship aimed at averting the violence that has been witnessed in the recent past. Police have also allowed the FDC leader to interact with his supporters along the way though there will be limitations on the time he will be spending in the towns.
FDC had planned to hold prayers for their president and country at large on Thursday, the day of the swearing in ceremony of president Museveni, but it emerged that the police cannot adequately deploy personnel to guarantee security at the prayers.
But FDC is concerned that it will be expensive for their supporters who will be traveling from upcountry to stay until Friday. Whether the impending visit by World leaders for President Museveni's swearing in ceremony has anything to do with the sudden change of hear and warm reception for Dr. Besigye is anyone's guess. But that the two parties have broken the ice and settled for dialogue will come as a pleasant surprise to Ugandans, many of whom have not known peace over the past few works.
These baboons after agreeing on receiving him, they BLOCKED Besigye and shot 5 people dead!! shame on u Ugandan police.
