1) The GoGo Brothers are from Japan, and I would say that they have a very good sense of what is "funky."
2) You can't really generalize and say that all dancers are garbage just because your students can't freestyle. That doesn't mean there aren't funky dancers in Japan.
3) This music is dubbed.

I know this is late but Marvenp it depends on the person, not the race.

im sorry to say this but u sound kind of cocky
i mean u keep saying u hv the higher level, but everyone has got their own opinion dont be so close minded and open it up more

Well said.

And on a side-note... if you don't have technique I personally think you ARE garbage... so I'm not sure what marvenp's idea of a good dancer is if dancers with technique are garbage without funk. I'd personally rather watch an amazing technical dancer thats slightly boring than a dancer with loads of energy but you can't see what they are doing...

I know some poppers who can lock for shit! Some who do general street, who know nothing of the "old skool" style or of the classical techniques.
But.. I say some.. and I'm not generalising.
Yes some people aren't "funky", some aren't as clean, some don't have the technique, but nowhere does it say what race/country does what.
It's the teacher who teaches the pupil and the pupil who learns from the teacher. Mistakes come from that and not the colour of their skin or the country they're from.

I think you're both right.
About the video the first locker wasn't great, and I've honestly seen better from Yuu outta Hilti and Bosch.
I've seen from some lockers that they are really clean, great technique but lack the "soul" or "funk"...
Other side I've seem some amazingly funky lockers but they are really messy and their technique is all over the place...
And not just lockers, in every type or style of dance, each individual has their pluses and minues, strengths and weaknesses....

No need to be so defensive. I'm just pointing out that I don't think it's necessary or fair to call a certain group of dancers "garbage," which was the rhetoric you used when describing Japanese dancers. It seems to be rather excessive criticism. Once again, I feel that these are merely generalizations, but I don't feel like arguing over it again.

All the locking battles I've seen in Japan seem to have had shitty music. I think it's because Japanese dancers in general don't really have a sense of "funky". Their dancing is all about technique. So yes technically they seem very good, but if you really look, they're garbage. Most of my students in japan can do choreo flawlessly but if just put on some good music and tell the go dance, they're lost.
If you want to see real locking, YouTube the video of "A-Train and Skillz vs GoGo Brothers".

Did you acutally withness all those battles in person?
The music is so shitty because it is not the original music these dancers were dancing to...
Due to the law of copy rights in japan...
MOST footages of japanese battles, music are all dubbed over...
Indeed they are very good technically...
but I do believe they have a ture sense of "funky" as well...(I have withness / danced with a lot of japense dancers) far from garbage for sure.
not sure what happened to your students though!
