Two Pacific National "NR class" diesel locomotives lead their Melbourne bound container freight train across the Hamilton Highway level crossing, located between Inverleigh and Murgheboluc in Victoria. Amazingly the flashing lights, bells, and boom gates are still not enough to prevent some drivers from foolishly proceeding through level crossings when trains approach, however thankfully on this occasion the train encounters no such problems from foolish drivers.

The NR class are an Australian mainline diesel electric locomotive that use GE Transportation Systems engines and traction equipment developing just over 4000 horsepower. They were introduced by National Rail in 1996 and are now owned by Pacific National.

  • Those gates sound exactly like the E-Bells in U.S.Nice to see the Aussies got some equipment from U.S.

Much of our rail technology is licensed from US companies. Most locomotives since the diesel era have been based around GE or EMD componants although our restrictive loading gauge means they usually don't look anything like their American counterparts.

  • Wow..........

  • most victorian frieghters are longer. you can be sitting at the lights for at least 5 minutes watching the containers go past...

  • I've seen longer trains.

  • @IAISrailfanner The Australian 81 Classes also use Nathan P5s as you can see in this video: /watch?v=AyMOIOzg5yo&list=PL78CA79A71C48F690

By Australian standards this is a long freight train. Most crossing loops are 1.6km (1 mile) or less which is the limiting factor, and even double stacking can only be done in limited areas.

  • great video how is that a long fright train, usa trains can be miles long

  • Great video

  • @gypsyball

Unfortunately no double stacking in Victoria. :-(
