"Health Information Technology: Can Federal Incentives Drive Adoption?"
Despite a growing crisis in delivering affordable, quality health care to its citizens, the US continues to lag behind other developed countries in its adoption of health information technologies with the potential to improve our health care performance and outcomes. In an attempt to spur technology adoption, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 offers over $34B in incentives, conditioned on "meaningful use" of "certified electronic health records". Dr Leavitt, founding chair of the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology, will share challenges and learnings from his 5 years of experience at the interface between government policymaking and the health information technology marketplace.
