Basically Charlie was badly bred and therefore had lots of dental problems because of this. At 6 months old he had to have his front teeth removed due to malocclusion where the teeth wouldn't wear down properly and he would have to have them filed once a month. The best option for him to live happily was remove these teeth to stop then splitting and getting infected with having them rasped.

He alsop developed problems with his molars where he needed these filed about every 6 weeks. For three years he was having this done without problems. He was happy in himself and still had a quality of life.

I had to move a long way away from my trusted vet for a new job. The new vet I registered with I never fully trusted.

In Charlies last couple of weeks he needed his molars filing as was normal for him. He had stopped eating, this was how I knew he needed doing. The day after his teeth were filed he still wouldn't eat so I took him back to see a different vet. She said she could see an infection in his gum and called the vet that had filed his teeth the day before to have a look. He said he couldn't see anything an argued with the other vet that there was nothing wrong in front of me.

The "good" vet went ahead and gave Charlie an antibiotic injection to be safe. She said to bring him back in 2 days for another look and injection if needed. We went back and this time we saw the bad vet as the "good" one wasn't there. He still denied any infection and without even looking in Charlies mouth to see what was happening he gave the injection and sent me home with a dose to give him on Sunday (when he was next due).

On the Monday I went in the garden to check on all the rabbits and saw Charlie huddled in a corner. I went over to him to check how he was and when I went to pick him up he screamed in pain. and I noticed he was struggling to breathe. I run in the house with him and shouted to someont to phone the vets and let them know I was on my way.

We got to the vets and a nurse took Charlie from me to rush him through to the back and put him on oxygen. I waited for the vet to come and speak to me (the good one). She come out and said they'd keep him in for the day and over night if needed.

I phoned them at 4 to see how he was doing and was told he'd be staying the night as he still wasn't right. I took his girlfriend Rosie to spend the night there with him as comfort, maybe to help him feel better.

The nxt morning the vet phoned me and said Charlie was looking better and she wanted to gas him to do some x-rays and have a look what was wrong.

About an hour later the vet phoned back and said the infection from his gum had spread to his nose and lungs. His jawbone had crumbled from the infection and he would never be able to eat again. The kindest thing would be to let him go.

He was still gassed and they were waiting for him to wake up when I had that phone call. I rushed there to see him for the final goodbye and sign the papers. When I got there the vet came out and told me he had already gone. He never woke up from the anaesthetic.

I didn't have to make the decision for him. I was taken to the back where we was to see him and say goodbye. I left him there to be cremated to bring back home. I went home with a very depressed Rosie who had now lost her best friend.
