Probably because everyone has this stereotype that he was only a teacher and just composed boring old studies, he's only for improving technical skills and not for live performance, blah blah.... that's a pile of bull. A lot of his works may sound like studies, but VERY beautiful ones. Remember, Czerny himself was a student of Beethoven. Anyone who likes Beethoven, Weber, or Schubert should definitely have a look at Czerny, his music is definitely of comparable quality.

I love how the fourth movement ends with a little imitative polyphony, as an introduction to the 5th movement fugue.

is there any resamblance to the hammerklavier fugue? or is it just me?

@AchilleDebussy I agree.....even within the constraints of the studies there are some moments of stunning lyrical beauty eg.nos 31 and 39 from op.335.

I'd like to add that the Adagio's middle theme is on of the most expressive themes that Czerny ever wrote. The entire sonata contains some of his best writing.

@AchilleDebussy I couldn't agree more that this is one of Czerny's better works. The Scherzo in particular is interesting because of its rythmic feature. I like the fugue tacked on for a final movement. He added a fugue to his 1st sonata in A-flat which is longer and at the conclusion quotes the opening of the 1st movement.

very good!!
I don't get why Czerny has been overlooked by so many pianists for so long. This sonata is great!
