Is it safe to swim with Stingrays following the death of Steve Irwin?

The circumstances surrounding the Steve Irwin accident are very unusual. Steve was in an area of wild Stingray's unfamiliar with human interaction and in very close proximity to Sharks. Sharks are a predator of the Stingray which would have made them extremely anxious and defensive of any type of interference.

I dived with the Stingray in the Cayman Islands this year, at Stingray City, the Stingray's are only there because people feed them and this is not an area renowned for sharks as the water there is very shallow. They have been accustomed to people feeding and petting them for over 40 years and despite thousands of people visiting every month, there has never been a fatality there due to a Stingray.

If you are ever fortunate to visit the Cayman Islands I strongly recommend you take a trip to Stingray City the experience is one you will treasure for the rest of your life.

This video is me having a bloody good time with the Stingray!

  • Thank you for some beautiful video of stingrays. We all have to remember, we are in their territory. It's a privilage that we get to swim with them at all. It's unfortunate of Steve Irwin's accident with them. Bless his heart & soul for all he taught us of the wilds of nature! It's certainly no accident that God gave Steve to us!!!

  • Dear crocodiles,

You owe me bigtime for this.

    Love Stingy

  • @DofusXel I know..I got that after I said it, I'm sorry :(

  • @polly10022 /facepalm @smurfieboo was doing a fake "letter" to the crocodiles in the world written by the stingray that killed steve, hence the "love stingy" at the end .. /facepalm

  • I think it's better that he got killed by that thing instead of a crocodile :/ there would've been blood, screams and everything..he died peacefully in the water, cause those things aren't poisonous, and it doesn't hurt either. That one just happened to hit him in the heart :c

R.I.P Steven Irwin. The best & bravest zoologist who ever lived.

  • @smurfieboo Does that look like a crocodile to you?

  • After Steve's Death thousands of Sting Ray's Died because of people.

The thing that's sad is Steve would probably given up his life to protect them

  • do you know what's sad? steve Irwin's last words were, "don't worry, they don't usually swim backwards" R.I.P. Steve Irwin

  • actually though, I went to Catalina Island and they have a touch tank thing where they take stingrays and cut off their stingers, and you can touch them. They grow back within a few months and they are let go. It's quite fun to watch them though.

  • @sanjam21 *Sips from expensive tea* Indeed -_0...
