David Papst Jr. Carves Out a Win at All American Speedway's Pumpkin Smash Enduro Race
Roseville, CA - (October 30, 2010) - Fans at All American Speedway in Roseville were let loose on the racetrack Saturday night to smash hundreds of pumpkins for the annual Pumpkin Smash-West Coast Enduro race.
Enduro racing tests a driver's stamina and endurance, as well as his driving ability and focus. The track is sprayed with water, and then lathered in soap. Smashed pumpkins with their slimy guts are a fun addition for Halloween.
If an Enduro car stops on the track for any reason, the driver can get out, but the car stays where it is on the track for the remainder of the race. This adds excitement because the drivers now have to dodge stopped cars on the track. The drivers continue to be challenged as half the race is run in reverse on the oval.
26 Enduro racers took to the track in Roseville for 250 sudsy, pumpkin-strewn laps. At the end of the night, David Papst Jr., driving the No. 2 car, took the win by leading for 224 laps.
At the start, No. 02 Joe Addison led the field for three laps, then Papst led for two laps before No. 44 Rick Bentz took over the lead on lap five. Bentz led for 20 laps, then Papst took the lead back again and held it until lap 90 when No. 13x Laren Whitwood took over for three laps. Whitwood surrendered it back to Papst on lap 93, and Papst led for the remaining 157 laps. He was followed across the finish line by No. 98 Ryan Strmiska, Addison, No. 18 Ron Wills and No. 7 Chris "The Magician" Lancaster.
"The car just hooked up," Papst said after the race. "It's the best it's handled in awhile. I'm just glad to stop Lancaster's winning streak." Papst, from Lodi, also won the Pumpkin Smash at Madera Raceway on October 23.
Lancaster said he had a very fast car, but it was loose throughout the entire race. At one point in the race, he was as far back as 12th, but he worked his way through the field and sat in third for much of the race.
No. 18 Ron Wills won the 15-lap Interceptor race followed by No. 55 Matt Manolis, No. 01 Brandon Erickson and No. 85 John Courier.
