Enrique Vila-Matas and Paul Auster in Conversation

For years Enrique Vila-Matas and Paul Auster have been engaged in an extended literary conversation, spanning continents and several languages. And in the ingenious short story by Eduardo Lago, which borrows its title, Brooklyn Trilogy, from Auster, the two are even brought together as fictional characters. Two years ago, they met in person for the first time and discovered that they do, indeed, share many common obsessions. Moderated by Eduardo Lago, who will read from the short story that unites these two writers.

In the case of Paul Auster's fiction, I feel engaged from the first page and so it's never a chore and always a joy to read his books - not only a great storyteller but with some very profound ideas that are universal and eternal. This Thanksgiving I'm giving thanks for writers like Paul Auster.

Thank you for this dialogue. I love what Mr. Auster says about the reader - that most readers come to a work with a sense of expectation and that the work of reading a book weeds out stupid readers. I totally agree with this. If they don't "get" what the author is saying or if it doesn't engage them, the stupid reader will put the book down and move on. I know that once I start a book I will persevere to the end, in the hope or expectation that at some point all will become clear.(continued)

@Bertili Te capto. Aunque el mismo se metio en un callejon al traducir en el min 4:30 Español-Español cuando tuvo que ser Español-Ingles (risas de Vila-Matas). En general, aunque genial y excepcional, la entrevista es muy enrevesada, quiza, y sin saberlo ellos, haciendo apologia del mismo FINNEGANS WAKE, de Joyce, escrito en tantas lenguas (y en un ingles que no se utiliza de manera comun) . De cualquier forma. ¡Que placer son estos escritores! Suerte y Gracias a ti tambien por el comentario.

@allanshandy No me refería a Lago, sino al joven a la derecha de Vila-Matas, pero gracias por la información. El inglés de Lago me resulta bastante forzado; hace uso de palabras que no se utilizan de manera común en el inglés, su acento es horrible y a juzgar por su actitud para con el otro traductor, es bastante arrogante. Esto lo digo más allá de su amistad con Vila-Matas, su participación en la Orden del Finnegas y su obra literaria. Está mal que hagan menos al otro traductor, gracias.
