@Nevada702 Yeah you're right. I'm originally from Worcester. It's a shithole. LOL!

Yeah but do any Southwesterner's know how to pronounce "Worcester"?
PaulBarte 2 years ago
This one does.
However, that would be largely irrelevant since Worcester is a New England "small city" with relatively few visitors.
In contrast, the "state" of Nevada has over 40 million visitors each year and it is internationally well known.
I frankly cannot remember a national news story about Worcester, MA. OTOH, Las Vegas is in the news constantly. There is frequent opportunity to hear Nevada pronounced on national TV, most often correctly, except on Fox News.

It was meant as a joke, since I'm pretty sure the original "correct" pronunciation isn't "Woostah", though that's the way it's said. Do you say "Missouri" as Miz-ory or Miz-ora?
PaulBarte 1 year ago
Yes, Missouri is that true exception among the US states where residents of a large southern part of the state choose to deviate from the state's standard pronunciation. OTOH, that is not the case in either Nevada or Oregon, the two most mispronounced American states, where residents have used the same standard pronunciation for more than 100 years.

You will also find non-words like 'irregardless' in many dictionaries. They are still incorrect usage indicative of careless or provincial use. There are Americans who mistakenly pronounce the "s" in Illinois. Those folks are generally considered uneducated - need I say more?
