Does af point selection work in full auto mode or only in the other modes. I've tried in the auto mode and it seems difficult at times to get the camera to go into ai servo af when in auto and it doesn't track the subject. What am I doing wrong or is something up with the camera.
@marek0086 If your model is hiding behind the pole, the camera will certainly focus on the pole but most of the time, it will chose the correct subject. (If you let it chose from ALL the points by itself.) You can guide it's choice by selecting GROUPS of points (up, down, left, right or center) and it will chose within the selected zone for even better accuracy.
@stefmixo~ Ok, but what if there are things in FRONT of your subject.... but not AS big as the subject u are tracking??.... will it quickly change the focus to the thing that is closer to the camera??..... and lets say this "thing" is just a very thin pole.... so its surface area is much smaller than the subject u are tracking.... will it still quickly try to re-focus even though its (the poles) "2D" area (relative to the camera) is much smaller than the subject you WANT to focus on?
@marek0086 It's not "recognition", in 99% of the photos, the subject is the closest focusable object. And YES it can keep it in focus, very useful for running humans, car races, animals etc ...
I have a 7D and it works amazingly well. This is only one of the MANY wonderful features of this amazing camera.
So are u telling me that the camera has the intelligence to RECOGNIZE the object (person, in this instance) and keep that object (person) in focus EVEN as its changing distance AND changing its position in the frame?!?!?

Get out of auto mode. It's not a point and shoot thing.

The D300s offers 51 AF points which is quite an excessive amount compared to the 7D's 16 AF points.
