Listen to 20m during a contest with an FT-817 with and without the 500Hz CW filter. "Wide" = normal, as factory; "Narrow" = 500 Hz.

  • Have you tried the 300Hz filter? If so, was it just too narrow?

  • Hi. I've not tried the 300Hz. But there's another video on youtube with it (not mine).

  • Thanks very much for the demo. I am considering how to "trick out" an FT-817 and this is of great value to my research. 73!

  • I now have an FT-817ND and I can honestly say its the best radio I have operated to-date. 73 DE Mike M0SAZ

  • I am using a 300 hz Inrad filter

    for rtty and psk31 modes.

I preffer the 300hz smallest filter

when the conditions are good so

its possible that there are a lot stations near a wanted weak station.

Concider an 300hz Inrad filter they know how to make quality filters (look at the filter plots!).

Some people do believe dsp can do

the same but forgot that weak signals

can be pulled down (agc) in the noise by an strong nearby unwanted station, dsp doesn't help you.

  • Well done

  • That issue is only a matter of adjusting AGC speed properly.

  • Thanks for a great video. I have the 500Hz CW filter and 2.3KHz SSB filter fitted in my FT-857D. Used in conjunction with the DSP the filters are even more amazing - providing a reference to get you in the ballpark and hitting it home with some DSP adjustment. My 857 is fully loaded, it even has the TCXO, making it a baby FT-897.

  • A nice demonstration. The filter does not degrade the keying envelope at all, which could mean an even narrower filter would be useful. I notice that on this rig, the AGC pumps up the noise between symbols, which might detract from readability in difficult conditions. 73
