Elliot Sober, Darwin's universal impact, Mon 6 July

What are the philosophical implications of Darwin's theory of evolution?
Do they show that there is no God, that materialism is true, and that ethics is a matter of opinion, not fact? Here I think we need to remember what the biochemist Jacques Monod said in another context: any confusion between the ideas suggested by science and science itself must be carefully avoided. In this connection, Ill discuss Darwins theory and its relation to what is now called methodological naturalism.

@Oranjeklant These are themselves philosophical positions about the nature of explanation and the status of philosophy itself. Would you care to defend it? If you can't then you're being dogmatic and we should ignore you, and if you can then you're arguing a philosophical position.The statement you make commits you to a position that is either self defeating or born of pure dogmatism. Btw: Sober doesn't think evolutionary theory needs a deity, evidently you took away a different message.

@Oranjeklant if u call philosophy useless then ur just not understanding it. stop being shallow. read a basic introduction to philosophical logic. see for ur self how many mistakes we make in reasoning. then u will start to appreciate the role of philosophy in helping us think rationally.

charles darwin was an idiot. the darwinian theory of evolution is IMPOSSIBLE for so many reasons. Just because the theory seems logical enough, does not make it true, which is why it is still a THEORY. evoulution does exist, but not darwinian evolution.
