The meaning is about a girl or a boy who has been hurt whether it was by someone close or just being in hell all their life. the song gives he/she a message that as a catepillar the situation may seem ugly or the they may feel like there's no hope because they been put down for so long. But as god see's what he/she goes through he delivers them from that hell that they are in and turns that dark situation(catepillar) into something of pure beauty(butterfly) and that's something only god can do.

Tattoos are something done in the past (or not) ...jewelry is whatever it is to you. I'm just saying that hand gesture is really popular these days. People from corrupt evangelists to Satanic high priests and everybody in between. That hand gesture is what it is. Look it up. I say nothing of his character. I never met the guy and if his music is sincere then I think we would get along fine.

I like this song. It covers all types of abuse and how ugly it can make you feel. It's great to know God can turn that ugliness into something beautiful. God sees our hurts that we're to afraid to show others and heals us. What a great message.
