Drills in Soccer are common but when talking about skills of soccer and soccer training we don't always talk about working on our weaker foot.
Today we are learning how to work on your weaker foot, opposite foot or your non dominant foot.
Description:
Most players are right footed, so their weaker foot is their left foot. If you are naturally left footed, then your opposite foot is your right foot.
Great soccer players can use both feet but usually one foot is always slightly more dominant then the other. So yes, you should strive to be able to play with both feet but don't think your weak foot has to be as perfect as your dominant foot.
My advice is master your technique on your dominant foot, and then when you are ready try it on your non dominant foot. Don't try to master a new technique using both feet in the beginning; just use your dominant foot.
For example. Shooting technique. If you are new to shooting then focus on your dominant foot shooting technique and practice that first. Don't switch to practicing your weaker foot a few shots into your practice if you still are not great at your dominant foot. It's better to be great one foot and weak at the other, then below average on both. Don't get me wrong you want to be great with both feet, but take baby steps to get there.
Key Points to working on your Opposite Foot:
1. Practice 5-10 minutes every training session you do on opposite foot training
2. Pick 1-2 techniques or tricks to work on per session instead of trying 10 different things. Example being work on your chipping technique for 5 minutes and the around the world trick for 5 minutes. All on your opposite foot. By choosing two things to work on you can focus more and increase the chance of you mastering it quicker then working on 10 tricks with your opposite foot and getting discouraged when you can't focus and master them quickly. Set smaller goals that are more realistic for you to achieve versus unrealistic goals that will increase your chance of failure
3. Every Online Soccer Academy training video I do can be applied to both feet. I don't say "Make sure to work on both feet" in every video because that should go without saying.
4. Once you master a new trick or technique on your dominant foot, then master it on your weaker foot.
5. Be patient! It's called your weaker foot for a reason so don't get discouraged when it takes you longer to master a technique on your opposite foot.
