Duck Sauce to Suzanne Vega (The Perfect Mix With Zero DJ Equipment!)

A basic description : I threw together two songs ... they stuck - and this was the result!

For anyone who maybe interested, here's exactly how I did it...



I used a standard Laptop with no special sound cards, audio leads or DJ hardware ... just a laptop with a pair of headphones.

Specification: 2 x Intel Core2 Duo Processor T5300. 2 Gb memory.
Operating system : Ubuntu 10.10

For the mix

My software choice is NS Virtual DJ 6.0.
This software is only available on Windows, so I created a Windows XP session using Sun VirtualBox (with no lagging issues) and ran it from there.

The music files I use are stored on my Linux hard drive, but locally networked to Windows using the VirtualBox settings.

Duck Sauce played was at normal speed - 0%, Suzanne Vega was queued up and constantly looped into 16 beats until I needed to use it.

The 1st beat of 16 beats was exactly matched to the 1st beat of 16 beats of the incoming song.
Then the auto-beat match (Sync) was applied to match the tempo of the incoming song.

The mix was cross-faded in exactly one minute before Duck Sauce finished. (Use the setting which tells you how much time is remaining on the first track)

Exactly one minute into Suzanne Vega is where the bass stops and the vocals begin.
Hence one minute before the Duck Sauce track finishes
is the perfect place to start the mix. The first song will naturally finish at the same time the vocals kick in on the second song (whether you mix them or not!).

There were no extra Virtual DJ effects added, no flange, echo or break-beats etc. The only 'work' I did was to kill the bass on Duck Sauce after Suzanne Vega had been playing for 16 beats.

The volume was kept at the same level on both tracks throughout, with no volume fading, I simply put the crossfader in the middle during the mix.

To export the mix, I adjusted the settings to save as an MP3 with 300kbits quality.

The Music

I converted the MP3 directly from YouTube using http://www.vidtomp3.com
If I did not have access to a site like this, then I would use Audacity to directly grab the audio playing from YouTube.

Again, I used no special equipment, Audacity simply grabs the audio from your built-in sound card.

I downloaded the music cover images (2 per track) from Google then placed them into position using Inkscape.

Video Production

I used the opensource program Kdenlive 0.7.8 which is a great for video editing. I tried using PiTiVi, OpenShot and LiVES, but they were all a bit buggy for my liking.

First of all, I imported my music mix and dropped it into the audio slot. Using the two images I created from Inkscape, I imported the first image and stretched it to the start of where you can first hear the mix.

The mix is a minute long, so I placed the second image at the same point and assigned a wipe display for 60 seconds.

Be careful how you create the project and the video size.

If you start a new file using 25 Frames Per Second and later export it at 24 Frames Per Second, the images will not be in time to the music. I know because I did it and it took me a while to figure out my mistake! YouTube prefer 30 Frames Per Second (FPS). For simple animations or desktop capture, you will be alright with 15 FPS.
