This favourite of the old New Orleans bands favourite kicks off in strict New Orleans ensemble style, with kicking two-beat bass from Colin Bray leading the way. Rainer's tenor banjo anchors the beat and immaculate snare work from Graham completes that pleasing street sound. Its quite a long track, with the front line taking two 32 bar chorus solos. Unusual for the H5JM but it evolved that way - Charlie had to attend the call of nature during Jan's first chorus on clarinet and did not quite make it back in time, so Jan went for a second chorus! Charlie then figured he better take two as well, following Jan's precedent (and what a great solo!) and Brian does the same. Not to be overlooked, Rainer then takes a banjo solo, at Charlie's direction. As it was a birthday request for a keen jazz fan, I guess the band felt they should give 100% value!
This video clip comes from a "Hot Five Jazzmakers" concert June 23/95 during the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival.
