PAT DINIZIO -- New Jersey native whose favorite key is E MINOR and master writer of songs about shattered, broken and irreparable relationships.
"I DON'T WANT TO LOSE YOU" is the first song composition that that Pat DiNizio ever wrote. It's about Pat's breakup w/ a high school sweethart named Ruth and
the composition was influenced by the music of The Byrds. It was recorded in Studio C of NYC's Record Plant Studios.....the same studio where Springsteen did "Born to Run" Pat didn't play on the track. He guided the band recording it and did the vocal lines.

Clifford Meth: "When you first started, who did you want to sound like?"

Pat DiNizio: "I dont know that we were going for a sound—I think it just happened. The band stills sounds very much the way we did when we first sat down and played together in my dads basement in Scotch Plains in 1980. It hasnt changed that much except, perhaps, the songs have matured. Some of the first songs I wrote, while charming, are not great compositions. Its someone learning how to write songs. Yet some of them--in fact my first composition, "I DON'T WANT TO LOSE YOU"--wound up on Especially For You and a lot of folks like that song. So you never know. It took a long time to get to that point--understanding how songs work, the mechanics of songs, having to dig deep inside and come up with melodies that are memorable. The hurdle I had to get over in terms of my live performances was when it dawned on me on stage one evening at Kennys Castaways that I WAS SINGING ORIGINAL MATERIAL THAT CONTAINED LYRCIS THAT REVEALED A LOT OF MY INNER LIFE TO COMPLETE STRANGERS. Eventually, I figured out that this is the job, THIS IS WHAT I DO."

Filmed at the 2d Annual Pat DiNizio House Concert, Arlington, Virginia, 27 March 2010. This song is from The Smithereens 1986 release "ESPECIALLY FOR YOU". The album was recorded in 10 days at Studio C of NYC's The Record Plant.

Thanks to my good buddy Ken Pinkela for hosting this event. GO CAPS!!!

  • If you've heard SMITHEREENS 2011, it is clearly apparent why this band has been able to remain productive over 3 decades! I vote SMITHEREENS -- Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievment Award!

  • This was a dream come true....getting up to play and sing for the first time ever publicly w/ the singer-songwriter who inspired you to pick up a guitar and attempt to express yourself! Pat DiNizio...gracious....kind ....humble....cool!
