These pieces, created by PolyU MDes Practices student Chris Hardy and supervised by Assistant Professor Peter Dean, are based on his observations of Chinese culture as he looks back on his first year living in China. China has the longest continuous civilization and traditions run deep through the people. The culture is as complex as it is beautiful and there is much he still has to learn.

In order to understand culture he has identified five elements that combine to create and differentiate cultures. These five elements include social constructs, how an individual relates to a population; political institutions, how people choose to govern themselves and others; economic conditions, how people thrive; spirituality, how people relate to existence; and environmental conditions, how people interact with their surroundings. For each element he has designed two pieces of furniture to express culturally unique characteristics of China.
