Explosion sparks fire?
Marion Heights blaze leaves family homeless
MARION HEIGHTS — Mitch Burach stood outside Tower of Pizza, consoling his sobbing daughter as firefighters tore through his house Sunday night with chain and circular saws, hunting for vestiges of a fire that may have started with an explosion in the kitchen.
Cindy Marshalek was leaving Tower of Pizza, the business she owns with her husband, when she saw the explosion just out of the side of the house, she said.
Joe was just walking up here, Marshalek said of Burachs son, who lived at the 100 E. North St. with his father. Marshalek yelled to Joseph, who yelled back to call 911 and get Pop!
Mitch, 87, was inside the house watching football, according to firefighters. When he went to use the bathroom, he noticed flames, they said. Marshalek had run back inside Tower of Pizza to call 911, and when I got back out, Mitch was outside, she said.
The elder Burach stood outside the restaurant, holding his daughter, whose name remained unknown at press time. He was wearing a fleece vest over a white T-shirt and what looked like blue hospital scrub pants. Joseph stood nearby, leaning against the restaurant, wearing mechanics coveralls. Both men were wearing only socks on their feet.
The fire call came in around 8:15 p.m., and by 8:35 p.m., most of the flames had been extinguished, though it took crews longer to work their way through the intensely hot building, checking for fire in the walls.
The sound of breaking glass could be heard over the rumble of fire trucks as crews broke out most of the windows of the building. Chain and circular saws were used to cut into the interior of the house, once a bar years and years ago, according to Marshalek.
As firefighters threaded their way into the building, they tore down its drop ceiling, looking for the last vestiges of the fire. Outside, the structures white siding was charred and blackened, especially near the windows.
Some firefighters spent quite a while in the building. One unidentified firefighter was in long enough that he was given a cursory exam by a paramedic as steam rose from the firefighters skin. After the exam, he held an ice pack to his throat, sweat pouring down his face.
Fire crews were still at work by 10 p.m., and the Marion Heights Fire Company captain wasnt available for questions. A Red Cross representative said the Burachs would be staying with family, and the agency was going to help with clothing and other items.
Assisting Marion Heights Fire Company were Kulpmont, Atlas, Anthracite Steam, West End, East End, and Mount Carmel Fire companies and the City of Shamokin Fire Bureau, AREA Services, and Mount Carmel Area Rescue Squad.
