An array of 18 RGB LEDs mounted on the ceiling are controlled by an Arduino. Also capable of ambient lighting or holding specific colors, but that's less fun to watch :)

Track List:

Metameme (Alex B Concepts Remix) - Sound Tribe Sector 9

Nil By Mouth (Reprise) - Bag Raiders

3 Play It Cool - Crazy Penis

Electric Avenue - Eddy Grant

Once Again - Girl Talk

Technical:

2 channels, each uses 3 of the 6 PWM pins. Line level audio is fed through filters to determine volumes at different frequencies. Software determines when the volume is above the average threshold and triggers the hit. Each LED is a 3 watt RGB star, 1 watt for each channel. They are mounted on heat sinks, placed in tuna cans, and finally covered with a plastic lens to keep the LEDs bright light from destroying retinas. Combined total of all LEDs on to make white light is 54 watts. Transistors are used to handle the current.

The audio circuit is based on a circuit (mostly) by Sylvain Bissonnette:

For color calculations I used code similar to this:

  • I would love to know what song you're playing starting at 1:04. Freaking awesome setup dude!

  • @jabbadu431 The song is 3 Play it Cool by Crazy Penis (lol). You can listen to it here: watch?v=IFv9ssDH7VI

  • @mrb2049 whats the names of the first two tunes?? thanks

  • @djviruz1 I've added the ordered track list to the info :)

  • have you seen enter the void? can that strobe be done? if so pllllzzzzzz tell me how!

  • @rome3dust I haven't seen the movie, but I just watched the trailer. You could replicate those effects with LEDs very easily, and were most likely used in the movie. You have to be careful though, I managed to disorient myself pretty badly testing out quick pulses around 14 hz (got the idea from the "dazzler" stun light device). It's even more hectic when you cycle colors each pulse.

  • Lol neighbors are probably going "WTF?" Haha.

On a serious note, I read in the description that the LED's are mounted on a heat sink, put in tuna cans, and covered with a plastic lens. For the lens, could I use one out of an old flashlight perhaps? I'm not looking to do what you did (amazing job, by the way), but rather just to light my room up with LED's.

I am an electronic engineering student just looking to light up his house with energy-efficient LED's.

  • reminds me of the jelly fish partying in spongebobs house.

  • thats..... AWESOME

  • How you doing man, do you think you could fill me in on your wiring, control circuit, and overall hardware setup. Im very curious and would like to attempt a similar project

  • @byles The video is set to allow playback on mobile devices, but I believe the copyright holder for "Electric Avenue" has superseded me and blocked it....

  • Awesome.

  • @mrb2049 whuts the name of the first two tracks??please thanks

  • it has strip club vibe
