Info for this version: It's basically the same as the other one, but with significantly improved visuals at a higher resolution, richer audio, all the Sega products and references removed (as a result, the movies were edited and the attitude of Simms is more mild), and better overall playability. The game includes an in-game diagram of the house so you don't have to pause the game, as it's always there. If you really want to play Night Trap on your Sega CD, this is the one to get... IF you have both a Sega CD and 32X. Yeah... you need both... it's one of five Sega CD + 32X games I believe, and the only one remotely worth its weight in gold... well, maybe Fahrenheit too, for novelty.

Wow... even when I learned how to play years ago, I never liked this game much. For those who don't know, it was at one time very controversial, though most of the controversy was highly exaggerrated. Despite that, it was one of the reasons the "ESRB" (Entertainment Software Rating Board) was formed as the game was seen as sexist, inhumane, violent, and a slew of other things. Whatever. The idea of the game is to protect a bunch of girls (co-eds) by watching eight rooms inside of a house owned by the Martin family, who seem like your average, hospitable bunch. Well, they're not.
The Martins are actually powerful vampires/monsters as you'll soon discover (if the truckload of cliches right out the gate doesn't make you aware) who have killed many girls and people at this house before, and they use the help of monsters known as "Augers", zombie-like half vampires of sorts who are too weak to act like regular vampires and are particularly sensitive to light, so they dress like ninjas to protect themselves. You are a member of the cool but badly abbreviated S.C.A.T. team (Sega Control Attack Team) who, along with the help of Kelly the undercover agent, will take control of traps and the security system to kill the Augers. If the Augers override your control in Hallway 1 or kill the girls or other important characters, you'll lose the game. You'll also be in big trouble if the Martins change the access code to the traps, so you'll have to listen in on their conversations and switch it accordingly.
Later versions of Night Trap toned down the "coolness" (references to S.C.A.T. or Sega products, Commander Simms is more mild, etc.) but look and play better. I can't settle with either being compromised, which is probably one of the reasons I don't like the game. Well, that and it never changes, so once you learn what to do, that's all there is to it. I can say that it was easily one of the more ambitious FMV games on Sega CD however (which originally stemmed from an unreleased Hasbro NEMO game, "Scene of the Crime"). The original costs to produce the game were in excess of a million dollars. The game was commercially successful due to the hype (read: controversy) that surrounded it.
One funny thing about the game is that you get your first bad ending by watching the introduction too long. Even if you watch it as intended, the game is still moving along, so you'll be about two and a half minutes in and have already failed to capture about 10 Augers. Being good in this game means knowing exactly who is where, requires several plays, and it prevents you from really enjoying many of the Auger deaths or the conversations throughout the house, which is unfortunate. Thankfully, people have went through the trouble to join the events together on YT.
This video shows some of the events throughout the house and a few Auger slayings. It is obviously not a major run of the game as I sit through many of the deaths and sit in on a few events so you can get an idea of what the game is like. I also have the Sega CD version, so I'll put up a video for it. Enjoy.
Note: The co-eds are (mostly) hot. The game features the acting talents of Dana Plato (Kelly... her career reportedly took a hit from this game), Arthur Burghardt (Collins) and Andras Jones (Jeff Martin).
Probably the most boring FMV game ever!
However, why I "just" almost fell asleep and not REALLY fell asleep makes me wonder. oO
