  • Shit. I don't have HBO, so I couldn't watch this. <:(

  • @innomind My only problem with Schnabel is he should be talking about film instead of painting. Gehry, on the other hand, has been working for 40-odd years quite successfully at architecture. You can attach some lofty ideals to the term "master," but all it really means is a mastery of a given craft. Is Gehry the best? No, I hardly think so. Has he mastered his craft? Yes, certainly. Masterclasses have always just been about learning from someone who has far greater experience than you.

  • @sestsa I was mostly talking about Julian Schnabel. But if you watch a bio documentary on Frank Gehry you will know why I included him as well... It's not about refusing or not refusing the "master" label. It's about what people call you not what you call yourself to be.

  • @innomind What do you have against Gehry? He's as much of a master in his field as anyone really can be without taking subjectivity into account. And refusing the master label doesn't mean anything. Only egotists label themselves masters. Ford and Hawks refused the artist label, claiming they were over-paid storytellers. Now they are considered among the greatest artists of Classic Hollywood. Besides, every one of these "masters" has a wealth of experience these kids can learn from.

  • @kanshefle

I second that.. He himself admits in this promo that he's no master.

Frank Gehry and Schnabel? I think the filmmaker of this series is making a mistake...

  • can't wait! but julian schnabel for painting? i don't think so.

  • Fabulous. So inspiring!

  • Great idea, great clip! Thank you.
