@Babyhowdy233 That's so true! I was honestly shocked when I saw what Mike looks like today, because of how much older he looks especially in comparison to other Monkees.

I was under the assumption that the powers that be did NOT want the Monkees to to involve themselves with the music making process--especially in the beginning. I wish the FOUR of them would do an anthology like the Beatles did and get their story down once and for all. Also--they BELONG in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for crying out loude!!

MANY music videos were created & shown on tv for various Rock acts (The Beatles, Pink Floyd,The Yardbirds, etc.) long before Mike's creation of a television program called "Pop Clips" (for the Nickelodeon cable network). In 1980, Nesmith's " Pop Clips" was sold to Time Warner/Amex consortium, who developed "Pop Clips" into the MTV network. Nesmith also won the first Grammy Award (1981) given for Video of the Year for his hour-long "Elephant Parts", but again he DIDN'T invent music videos.

It is nothing less than shocking how much he has aged in less than ten years! This was filmed 17 years ago in 1994, but I've seen interviews that Mike gave in the early 2000s and he still looked the same as seen here. The only time I've seen someone age that rapidly in such a short period of time is when they had suffered a serious, debilitating illness. But as far as I'm aware the only band member who has dealt with such is Peter Tork, and Peter looks ALOT younger than Mike does now.

When the Monkees first were created they were gong to let them play their own music and write, but they weren't able to focus long enough to actually get work done so Kirshner took over the project. They did have to fight for being allowed to do their own music because the formula was working so well. However Mike was very involved in the production of the first album and would produce many of the songs. How many of them were actually released is questionable.

Fair enough, thanks for the response.

@MechoMadness well.......im in the music biz myself......well sorta....i had to detach myself from it, largely because i saw the dynamic between commerce and entertainment.......there is absolutely no chance that what mike nesmith is saying is sincere -- a successful enterprise formulated by a production company and provided material/production/musicians would IN NO WAY be encouraged to 'do their own thing' not now and not in the 60's......why is mike saying this stuff? because he instigated it.

I thought he was shy. Doesn't look it.

We've just heard from "the horses mouth" that it was a MYTH that The Monkees weren't encouraged to write music or play instruments.
So, how come you know more than Michael Nesmith? Kindly elaborate.
-
he's so full of shit....the monkees were [not] encouraged to write music or play instruments............they fought for that.
papa nez is the man!

He has such a fantastic sense of humour, I love that last bit! The disappointment that it actually made some sort of sense!
