Culture Says YES to Same Sex Marriage in Argentina 2

At present, the Argentine Civil Code defines marriage as the union between a man and a woman. Despite many judges have ruled in favor of same gender couples by stating that this definition is uncosntitutional, there's not a law that supports us yet.

A bill has been presented to modify this definition, allowing for same gender people to get married and have access to the same rights, with the same names as heterosexual couples already do. The House of Representatives has already passed it. Now it's under debate on the Senate Committees. The final votation will take place next July 14th, 2010. Hopefully, this bill will be made law by then!

If and when it does, Argentina will become the second country to acknowledge these rights to same gender couples in the Americas (at present only Canada has a law that covers all its citizens).

En la actualidad, el Código Civil de Argentina define al matrimonio como la unión entre un hombre y una mujer. A pesar de que muchos jueces ya han fallado en favor de las parejas del mismo género, no hay todavía una ley que nos ampare.

Se introdujo un proyecto de ley para modificar dicha definición, y así permitir que las parejas del mismo género accedan a los mismos derechos, con los mismos nombres, que las parejas heterosexuales. El proyecto ya fue aprobado en la Cámara de Diputados, ahora está siendo debatido en las Comisiones del Senado. La votación se llevará a cabo el próximo 14 de julio de 2010.

Si, y cuando se apruebe, Argentina pasará a ser el segundo país en el continente en reconocer estos derechos (en la actualidad, sólo Canadá otorga los mismos derechos a todos sus ciudadanos).
