Panic attack during labor is a very bad experience, especially for first time mothers. Labor as it is, is already a traumatizing experience, if you pair it with panic attack it will triple your dilemma. Labor and panic attack is simply a duo you do not want to come face to face with.
Please do not get me wrong, I am not trying to scare the wits out of you. I am merely presenting reality. A reality we can escape if we work hand-in-hand. So what causes panic attack during labor? One too many things, however, let us discuss them one by one.
The first possible cause is a mind-set that labor is going to be gruesomely painful. You have all the reason to believe that with all the stories you hear from other mothers; or maybe, from your very own experience with labor. However, setting your mind to experience too much pain will only heighten your anxiety; and with heightened anxiety, comes a panic attack. Although, it is true that labor can be very painful, do not focus too much on that thought, think about the satisfaction of being a mother instead.
The second most rational cause of your panic attack is the event that transpired during your pregnancy. If these events are negative, then there is a very big chance for you to develop a panic attack. Negative thoughts and experiences can collectively form anxiety, and this anxiety leads to a panic attack.
One more thing is hormone. This one is probably the most difficult factor to control because pregnant women are really hormonal. The increase in your hormones gives you a surge of both negative and positive emotions. The former causes you to be anxious and may lead you to a panic attack. Although it is true that you cannot control your hormones, you can always control how you react to these hormones.
The last thing on my list is the mother's lack of know-how during labor. If you are the kind of person who gets anxious when you do not know what to do and expect, then not knowing anything about labor and child bearing will trigger your panic attack. Ask around and read about it to fight off the chances of getting anxious.
Maybe it is also good to note that lack of support from loved ones can be a probable cause to. If you cannot get this from your partner, then surround yourself with people who can. If there is no one around to do that, love yourself instead.
Convincing yourself that everything will work out well is the best thing you can do to avoid a panic attack. Keep your mind off nasty things and you would surely have a wondrous experience. A piece of advice, focus on your baby and not on the pain.
