Season 4 - Roberta Shore (Betsy) is gone from the Ride In, she only appears in episode 5 'The Awakening' in which she gets married and moves away. She is replaced by Diane Roter as Jennifer Sommers (Judge Garth's niece). Lee J. Cobb leaves the series mid season and John Dehner is brought in as 'Ranch Manager' Morgan Starr. There is quite a turnover of stars in this season but the series survives for another 5 years.

  • Why does Cobb leave I like him?

  • Lee J wasn't satisfied with the hectic production schedule of The Virginian. He preferred the slower pace of movie making. He saw a chance to get out of his contract and did.

  • One comment on this season: when Lee J. Cobb quit and the character of Morgan Starr was brought in, I never could figure out why Diane Roter's character was kept on. I liked the Starr character and was sorry he was replaced in the next season. But I did feel sorry for Diane Roter. I don't think that she appeared in many episodes.

  • After Lee J left, they had to fulfill Diane Roter's contract. As I recall she was in 7 episodes in Season 4. When the Graingers were brought in for Season 5, of course, Jennifer had to go. I agree she didn't get a fair chance to show what she could really do.

  • Great. Thanks for posting. This just leaves the opening for season 7 with David Hartman missing.

  • Season 7 Theme/Ride In is on its way. It should be processed in just a few minutes. :)

  • It never really was the same when Roberta Shore and Lee J Cobb left. There was little continuity of story line. But boy did I love Trampas and his horse AND Clu Gulager. This story was suppposed to take place in Wyoming, but it sure looks like S California to me. I read somewhere that the ranch set was on a backlot at Universal just off one of the freeways.

  • Cobb wasn't getting the movie parts which is why he took The Virgnian. He made lots of money off of the show then left and ultimately bad-mouthed the show, which I still don't understand. TV was and still is a hurry-up production. Cobb was a stage actor, accustomed to weeks of rehearsal time, as opposed to TV and movies.

  • great show and great stars

  • No, indeedy. Roberta Shore's real name is Jymme Roberta Schorup, and she's a Mormon from Califnornia. Dinah Shore's real name was Frances Rose Shore, and she was a Jew from Winchester, Tennessee.

  • I always wondered if Roberta Shore was related to Dinah Shore. Anyone know?
