So I've become the go-to uke guy for southern Nova Scotia. This guy called me up with a question about his baritone uke. So today on Ukulele Restoration, I build a new nut out of hard plastic.

  • also where do you get a replacement nut?do you use a guitar nut?and how do you decide on the string spacing exactly?thank you!

  • @statchcook Yes you can use a guitar nut or build your own out of bone or very hard plastic. As for string placement, just make sure they are evenly spaced and not too close to the edge.

  • where are you from in nova scotia?

  • @statchcook From West Pubnico, but I live in Shelburne now.

  • Wow! My Baritone is an "El Degas" too and the exact same model EU-55. Its really too bad that neither of them have a serial number. Mine has been in the family for at least 30 years.

Coincidental mine has a homemade nut too. The original nut went missing years ago so it hadn't been played for a long time, until last fall when I put it all back together. I just used an old piece of hard wood for my nut. Some day I will need to redo it and use hard plastic, because the wood will get warn away.

  • You are a clever fella and now everyone in the neighborhood is finding that out! Fun to watch this stuff.
