Hello Janice,

I have been stationed on Okinawa twice and it is still a very nice place. Makiminato is no longer a base though, it was turned over to the Japanese and subsequently turned into a popular shopping district.

I was in Okinawa for one year at MCAS Futenma...wish I could've stayed longer...in spite of all the typhoons and the hot muggy weather.

Hi, All:

I also lived on Okinawa from 1972 to 1974. There were still many military bases there. My husband at the time was stationed at Makiminato while in the Army.

The living was a mix of traditional and Americanized. We had many Okinawan friends who were very special to us.

Some of the videos brought tears to my eyes.

Hang in there, Webbar. It does get better.

doug, I can only imagine what it was like there in the 70's before it became heavily developed and paved over with military bases. Was it still pretty traditional living back then?
