In fact, this focus became so practical -according to the upper crusts of society- that in 1930's America, people werer required to take exams which were developed for determining the success of a family's pedigree. This practice of indoctrination is commonplace throughout world history; especially European history and contemporary American history (The forever war against Islam and the Qu'ran). I can understand your frustration with the overbearing tendencies of certain religions. However if you consider the fundamental role of religion as tool to indoctrinate and shape the identities of the masses, you will see that religion itself is not the culprit. Governments and societies utilize Catholicism, for example, in conjunction with the catholic church in order band the proletariat together on a common belief that all who reject Christ are evil, and that the homeland is sacred.
