Three years after Hurricane Katrina, 12,000 people remain homeless in New Orleans, many of these becuase of the storm. Thousands remain stuck in FEMA trailers that are posioned by toxic amounts of formaldehyde. Soon they will be forced to evacuate the trailers due to this poison. Many of them will also become homeless. Worse still, the city is using the hurricane as an excuse to demolish perfectly good public housing, driving rents higher by hundreds of dollars a month.

The bad news coming out of City Hall for these homeless victims is that the New Orleans City Council is considering an ordinance that would make it illegal to camp on public property and use motor vehicles for habitation purposes.

The effect of this law will be to force a good number of New Orelans' homeless, many of whom were merely victims of a vicious hurricane, to choose either leaving the city they call home, or be arrested.

Please take a moment to view this YouTube video, made by law students working over spring break to bring justice to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. In it, you will see a small snippet of the current state of life for many hurricane victims.

Then write to the New Orleans City Council and Mayor Ray Nagin and let them know that the world is watching them and how they treat the most vulnerable in their city. Tell them to oppose Calendar No. 26,928. Please keep all correspondence respectful!

The law will be considered on May 1, 2008, and is called Calendar Number 26,928 (creating N.O. City Code sec. 54-419).

  • lol @ the claim we are "persecuting" these subhuman niggers.

Persecution to them means they aren't getting enough handouts!

  • Right... I know... this was all horrible... no one cares!

Please Stop the war and hate.

    Peace and love mate.

  • Where were these people when other disasters happen to other parts of the country? I totally agree with your comment.

  • "you people is the people we entrusted to help us out"-so you say. Thats the problem in American, you come to think that just because its America, you are entitled to get any help from anybody. Guess again, help only comes for those who ask for it or show that they need it. Lines like that really pisses me off. I will help but I dont need to be told to do so.

  • are the people themselves doing anything besides asking for someone else to do something? Shit happens. deal with it
