  • "Gradualist" - step 1 is simply inserting a clause that says our GG is simply our symbolic and tentative Head of State. The steps thereafter can be determined by Parliament (Citizen initated referenda, bill of rights etc).

  • You have not even said anything about changing our entire military uniform, protocol and many other things that could put our budget into deficit so you are very wrong when it comes to the cost of becoming a republic. I assume youre not in favour of the minimalist model so you want one person a president to have more power a bigger mandate than any other elected member in the country?

  • First, the paper work between the States and Federal government cost us $49 million per year; the GG $11 million per year; gifts to the soverign average $200 000 per year; changing the coins everytime a monarch dies has costed us $100 000 000. Hence your cost argument is flawed. The Republic can pay for itself.

  • Uh, no. There is something wrong with having a German as an Australian Head of State, an arbitrary philistine on welfare, as Liz's OWN historian put it. As for price, great. It proves precisely why we should become a Republic. Let's get the inevitable process over and done with as our population expands!

  • "it is needless to spend much time in exposing the folly of hereditary right; if there are any so weak as to believe it, let them promiscuously worship the ass and lion, and welcome it. I shall neither copy their humility, nor disturb their devotion."

  • Some day australia will be confident enough to have an australian as head of state and a republic. not an un elected elitist. Grow some balls

  • Australia does not need a republic nothing is wrong in having the queen as our head of state. Also to change from a monarchy to a republic is a very very expensive thing to do

  • Austrailia needs a republic!! the empire is over. The queen and monarchy is dead

  • holy s***! That questioner clearly wanted to be excited and inspired instead he got the most dull as dishwater answers. No wonder the referendum failed.
